Knitting Knote

I'm finally getting around to accumulating the fiber to make this “modern quilt wrap” scarf/stole/giant rectangle of simple mindless knitted goodness. Its only been two or three years since the pattern came on the market. Priorities. The pattern calls for 9 different-colored balls of Rowan Kidsilk haze. Naturally, in the time it has taken me to decide I do actually want to posses this wrap after all, one of the colors has been discontinued (578 swish). Ergh.

I’m no slouch at choosing colors, so I did replace a few in this mix, like the burgundy with a fuschia. Sadly, the missing hue is a sort of gold, which really has no analogy in the current color list other than a wan golden brown. I did order a pale gray hoping that the color might not matter as much as the chroma. Fail. The project really needs a pert yellow representative.

The color “642 ghost,” was my replacement; it was a dud with the others. I thought I would dye it to the gold. I could have gone all anal retentive on it and pulled out the dyes and fixers etc. and tried to match the color perfectly. Bah. I threw two packets of lemon and one packet of orange Kool-Aid into a pot of cold water, tossed in the gray kidsilk haze and let'er rip. I keep Kool-Aid on hand just for these sorts of emergencies. (Seriously, I really do. The Things, they don’t like it so much.)

Viola! Unmistakably Gold! It’s not the color that the Rowan people made, it is very close in hue but a brighter chroma, I like! In the photos I have seen of 578 swish, it is a dull gold; this brassier one  contrasts nicely with the fuschia I also used.

In addition, none of the grays they had turned me on, so I got a ball of 592 heavenly (cornflower blue) and I'll throw some of my own black on it, so I'll get a more interesting gray. This time I have to break out the messy stuff though. Sigh. There’s no black Kool-Aid.
