Living with the parents they have has really rubbed off on the Things. They're both pretty independent and willing to try to do things for themselves. Unless its inconvenient, or they've been told to do it, of course. This week, Thing 2 demonstrated his self-reliance in the age-old way that children over the world have done.

Wednesday after school, Thing 2 came out to the patio (after what had been a longish quiet interval...) to very proudly and excitedly announce that he had cut! his! own! hair!!! I tried to stifle a guffaw: he had suddenly acquired a light-bulb shaped head. Sigh. So I gave him a buzz cut. Now it's a collaborative haircut. There are still spots where he got really close to his scalp though. I'm hoping they'll be less noticeable in time for his violin recital. Kids.

Sigh. Its sights like this that make me think we're doing things right after all. I'm sure the Things will be punching each other out before they get to the end of the block, but still. That's lovely.

Parenting, the toughest job you'll ever love.

Addendum

I did indeed finish the patio, laying the stones and tamping the granite worked pretty darn well, so far no skunk action, which is good, I don't want to have to buy a gun, but I will if they force my hand on this. Here is the end result, my purty new front yard sittin' parlor.

Before you get too nauseated by the neighborhood, I did feel the need to chain the chair frames discretely to a loop I set in the ground. Attractive nuisance, you know.

Oh, yeah. I found my camera finally. Somewhere I've looked a million bazillion times already, so embarrassing I can't even say. Augh.
